SCHOOL PHILOSOPHY
OVERAL STUDENT GOALS:
FAMILY EDUCATION PROGRAM:
HEBREW IMMERSION AND CONVERSATION:
At Adat Shalom, we work to create a caring, compassionate community that infuses our children with spirituality and a positive Jewish identity. We want to make Judaism continually and uniquely relevant in their lives through the study of Torah, tradition and Mitzvot. We want to encourage our children to act and live according to Jewish ethical values and develop a life long commitment to Judaism, Israel, our Adat Shalom community and the Jewish community at large.
Students will gain both knowledge and understanding of Conservative Judaism, Jewish Holidays, Bible, Mitzvot, Prayer, Holocaust and Israel.
Students will gain skills in reading and writing Hebrew.
Students will be able to articulate their understanding of Jewish ethical values, of G-d and of the Jewish people.
Students will know how to perform Shabbat and Holiday rituals and participate in a synagogue service.
Students will participate in Tzedakah and Tikun Olam projects and field trips.
Students will gain basic knowledge and skills in preparation for Bar/Bat Mitzvah.
Families will participate in family educational programming.
Each class will learn Rambam’s 8 levels of Tzedakah, the laws on tithing (giving 10%) and Rabbi Hillel’s famous teaching “If I am not for myself who will be, but if I am for myself only, what am I, and if not now, when?” Each class will discuss and choose an organization to sponsor for the year. During the year, each class will find creative ways to raise funds and to help their organization. At the end of the year, each class will send 100% of their funds to their organization.
School Tzedakah Project: :
This year’s choice organization is The Jewish National Fund Project. Tzedakah is not just about giving money but also giving of one’s time, mind and heart. At Adat Shalom we have fun building our community and giving our love and hearts.
Each year we invite families to participate in a Mishloach Manot project for Purim while studying together with our children, our Rabbi and our teachers. It is a mitzvah (commandment) to give to others during Purim. We invite all families, young and old, to participate in fulfilling this commandment and to study together. Please feel free to bring grandparents and other family members.
Our Hebrew Immersion program is an ideal way to learn Hebrew in a natural and fun setting. We convert the classroom into whatever the subject might be, such as a beach with sand, an ice cream parlor with real desserts or a restaurant. Students are able to have fun and interact while speaking Hebrew. This is a wonderful program and we encourage everyone to attend a free trial session.
